American Pie

I. Look for God and the controlling force
  • God is in controll "and do you have faith in God above"
  • The universe was created

II. Humanity and Identity

  • Humans are flawed "The Jester stole his thorny crown"
  • We as Humans are dual
  • We as Humans are guilty

III. Conflict and Suffering

  • Conflict of humans are that the music has died, which means that God has died out of society and that is why we have problems on this earth.
  • The universe is flawed by satan
  • The flaws are the people who are "the jester" who is trying to mock Jesus and God.

IV. Hope and Redemption

  • The answer to human conflict is going back to God and not letting the "Churchs bells be broken" meaning that we have to keep Christ alive in our society.

V. Values and Relationships

  • Good= God (the music) Bad= The devil

Cosmic Humanism or Secular Humanism?

In the Wizard of Oz the worldview is Secular Humanism. This can be seen throughout the movie whether it be through how Dorothy, the tin man, and the lion discover who the wizard is, or how they solve their problems. When all of the main characters go out to find the answer to their problems they think that the wizard can do it. When they finally get to talk to the wizard they discover that he is really not a wizard at all but in fact a fake. This models Secular Humanism, because secular humanists do not believe that we as humans need a "god" like figure to answer our problems. So when Dorothy and all the others realize that the wizard is a fake, they also come to know that they themselves can fix their problems and that they do not need someone to do it for them. They soon come to discover that they have had it in themselves the whole time, for example Dorothy finds out that all she had to do to get home was tap her shoes together, and she did not need the wizard to take her home. All of these characters find out that there is no wizard, just like secular humanism which states that there is no god.

Question #2 The worldview in the Wizard of Oz

The worldview in the Wizard of Oz is postmodernism. This worldview is seen through the main characters Dorothy, scarecrow, tin man, and the cowardly lion. Each of these characters think that they have a problem that can only be solved by the wizard, this relates with Postmodernism because they believe that before people began thinking for themselves, they all thought that they needed a god "wizard" to help them. In the Wizard of Oz all of these characters go out on a quest to find the wizard and have them fix their problems, but when the finally reach the wizard they find out that he is one big fake. This is the exact thing that postmodernist's believe about our world that once people started taking the time to think for themselves they discovered that god was nothing more than what people made him to be. Dorothy and all the other characters did not really need the wizard to fix all of their problems, because they could fix them themselves and did not need a phony wizard to do it for them. Postmodernism encourages people to think for themselve and you can see this idea In the wizard of oz after the characters found out that the wizard was a fake they all became much happier knowing they could solve their own problems.

Question #1 finding worldviews in a writing

When looking for a worldview in the text it is important to understand background information about the author. By knowing about the author it will make understanding the worldview of the text easier to identify. Also you must read the writing in context, so that you may understand what the "big picture" of the writing is about. It may be helpful to the reader if they have an understanding of different worldviews, so that they know what to look for. When looking for worldviews in writings it is very important that the reader starts the piece with an open mind as to what worldview the writing may be about. By doings this it will make identifying the worldviews a lot easier because the reader does not already have a set opinion on the piece.
